The Shiawassee County Health Department seeks a qualified individual for a Public Health Nurse.  Under the supervision of the Director of Personal and Community Health Services, provides comprehensive nursing services including assessment, diagnosis, teaching, counseling, and prevention services to individuals, families, and groups to promote health throughout the County. Coordinates and participates in the operation of clinics and programs to promote health and wellness to clients in the County. Maintains patient records and program activity records and prepares required reports.  Working hours are Monday thru Friday 8am-5pm.  Full-time and Part-time positions available.

Qualifications for Employment:

BSN preferred with one to two years of nursing experience required.  Previous public health, health screening skills, and ability to work with children desired.  Good assessment and communication skills essential. 

 

Salary Range

$35,292 to 51,338

Salary negotiable in relationship to education and experience.

 

Essential Functions

 

1. Participates in planning, developing, implementing and coordination of Personal and Community Health programs including providing direction of program staff.

 

2.  Coordinates and participates in the operation of clinics by scheduling and delegating activities to nurse technicians and clerical workers.

 

3.  Conducts health assessments in clinics, including conducting physical assessments, obtaining blood pressure, temperature, measurements, and other data and developing information on health history, diet history, and family health status. Administers immunizations, educates clients on potential side effects, and monitors for adverse reaction. Reads and interprets lab reports, administers urine pregnancy tests, and performs a variety of related procedures in the clinics.

 

4.  Assesses various tests and screening results and correlates them with health history and physical assessment. Determines absence or presence of abnormalities in the health history, physical examination, and health maintenance activities. Plans and provides appropriate intervention

 

5. Interprets health screening findings to the family and makes appropriate referrals, utilizing an up‑to‑date list of resources in the County. Contacts local health providers and community agencies to make referrals.

 

6.   Provides education to clients and families relative to nutrition, health care, pregnancy, communicable diseases and other subjects as needed by client.

 

 7. Provides home visits if necessary.

 

 8.        Investigates and monitors reports of communicable diseases such as measles, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, and others. Coordinates efforts with physicians, school personnel, and others regarding spread and treatment of the disease. Provides health care services, instruction and information to clients in compliance with related public health laws.

 

 9. Collaborates with administrators, supervisors, and inter‑agency personnel to review and interpret data relevant to the health needs of the community. Compiles data and statistics for administrators to assist them in determining priorities for department services. Participates in program planning and development through involvement in department and community committees.

 

 10.   Initiates, maintains, and updates various records, and prepares reports of work     activities, communicable diseases, and other subjects for state reports and departmental administrators.

 

11.    Participates in the orientation of new staff and the direction of other personal health personnel.

 

12.  Assists in community health education on a variety of topics and represents the department at various community activities related to the promotion of heath and the prevention of disease.

 

13.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

 

Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
